Frequently Asked Questions

How long is a session, and how often will I need to come?

Our sessions are ~55 minutes long. Our practice aims to help and guide you through change from your first session. We believe clients know best how long and how often they need to come. For some people, this means they want to come weekly or even a couple of times per week while they are “in the thick of it.” For others, coming every other week or even less is what works best for their schedule and needs. Some clients find they get what they need in 4-5 sessions; others may attend six months to a year.

What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept most major credit cards, HSA, and FSA cards. All clients have a card on file and are charged either the morning before or the evening after a session. By using this system, we can focus on your treatment during the session instead of collecting fees.

Do you accept insurance?

We do not accept any In-Network insurance benefits at this time. However, we have partnered with Mentaya, a company that allows us to submit your superbills for you and receive Out-of-network reimbursement. Please visit our Fees and Insurance page for more information and check your Out-of-network coverage.

Can you work with me if I have Medicaid health insurance?

The state of Colorado does not allow providers to work with clients who have Medicaid health insurance unless they accept that insurance. This means that, if you have Medicaid, you are only allowed to see Medicaid providers, even if you would be able to self-pay for therapy. Therefore, we are unable to work with any clients who have Medicaid at this time.

What is your fee?

Our sessions are $140 for a 55-minute session. We understand therapy can be expensive and inaccessible to many people. This is why we aim to make your session helpful from the first time you come to our office and why we work with Mentaya to help you get reimbursed by your insurance company. Please visit our Fees and Insurance page for more information.

How will I know if therapy is working for me?

This is a great question and one we will start exploring right away in your first session! Together, we will paint a picture of what your life would be like if therapy were helpful for you, and we will decide what needs to happen in therapy to reach that outcome. We will also use multiple evidence-based tools to track your progress. We will share this information with you to decide together when you are ready to graduate from therapy.

What type of clients do you typically work with?

At A Way Through Counseling, we focus on serving people who want to learn tools and skills to make changes quickly. We serve a wide variety of individuals struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, addiction (both behavior and substance use), mood disorders, relationship problems, and life transitions. We specialize in serving clients going through religious deconstruction and/or processing religious trauma. Our approach aims to help people who want to move forward instead of dwell on the past.

Is therapy confidential?

The law generally protects the confidentiality of all client and therapist communications. No information is disclosed without prior written permission from the client. However, there are some exceptions required by law to this rule. These exceptions include:

  • Suspected child abuse or dependent adult or elder abuse. The therapist is required to report this to the appropriate authorities immediately.

  • If a client is threatening serious bodily harm to another person. The therapist is required to notify the police.

  • If a client intends to harm himself or herself. The therapist will try to work with the individual to ensure their safety. However, if an individual does not cooperate, additional measures may need to be taken.

  • By using insurance, the client allows their insurance company to access confidential information. This is the only way insurance will pay for sessions.

Do you offer in-person appointments or telehealth?

We offer sessions both in-person in Fort Collins, Colorado, and over telehealth for anyone in the state of Colorado. All of the treatments we offer work well in person and online. Our telehealth platform is HIPAA-compliant and confidential.
